🤠 Bigger and Better in Texas
In Texas, livestock shows are more than prize cattle, goats, and lambs — they’ve become some of the largest stages for youth shotgun sports in the country. Out of the state’s eight major stock shows, five feature competitive shooting tournaments that award scholarships, buckles, and life-changing opportunities to young athletes.

📍 Where It All Happens
The season begins with the Heart of Texas Fair (HOT Fair) in Waco each October, followed by the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR). Then come the two largest: Rodeo Houston and the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo (SALE), both held in February.

To qualify, athletes must:

  • Be members of Texas 4-H or FFA

  • Reside in Texas

  • Compete in a Major Show Qualifier before entry deadline

  • Be ages 9–18 (or age 8 in 3rd grade)

🎯 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo (FWSSR)
Debuting in 2022 at Defender Outdoors, FWSSR’s two-day event combines side games with a 100-target preliminary and 100-target final for 4-H and FFA athletes. Nearly $20,000 in premiums are awarded, with highlights including:

  • Trick shooting by Travis Mears

  • Make-A-Break finals

  • Blaser and Zoli shoot-offs, where athletes can win brand-new shotguns under the lights

🏆 San Antonio Stock Show (SALE) Junior Shootout
Since its start in 2013 with 340 athletes, SALE has grown into a powerhouse with 1,057 athletes from 108 counties competing in 2023. Held at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, this four-day event features:

  • American Trap, Doubles Trap, and Sporting Clays

  • Dozens of buckles and prize packages valued at $750–$1,000 each

  • Multiple $10,000 scholarships per discipline

  • Hourly educational clinics with top shooters like Cory Kruse and Haley Dunn, and instructors Gil & Vikki Ash

With over millions of dollars awarded in prizes and scholarships across its 11-year history, SALE has changed the trajectory of countless young shooters.

🎉 Rodeo Houston Young Guns
Launched in 2014, Rodeo Houston has grown to host 500 Sporting Clays athletes and 400 Skeet athletes. Unique features include:

  • Sit-down meals and hospitality for athletes and families

  • Professional management at the Greater Houston Gun Club

  • Rodeo Wildlife Committee members serving as squad “caddies”

  • Guaranteed payouts, buckles, and prizes for all finals competitors

  • Scholarships and awards totaling tens of thousands of dollars

🌟 Success Stories

  • Ryann Phillips: Won two $10,000 scholarships, two Blaser F16s, and used SALE as a springboard into Olympic Trap. She’s now a USA Shooting Junior gold medalist and Women’s National World Cup team member.

  • Hunter Martinez: An 11th grader who won a Blaser F3 at SALE, crediting the event for building his confidence under pressure.

  • Micaela Valesquez: A 9th grader who has placed in both Skeet and Sporting Clays at Houston, building her skills and competitive experience.

  • Lane Picklo: Turned his Rodeo Houston winnings into entrepreneurship, starting his own laser engraving business.

💬 More Than Livestock
Texas livestock shows aren’t just about raising animals — they are opening doors for youth athletes across the state. Scholarships, prizes, and confidence-building competition are shaping futures, launching careers, and even creating new businesses.

For families considering entering, the investment of time and effort pays back in memories, camaraderie, and opportunities that last a lifetime.
