Recap: 2024 Southwestern Grand – Sedgwick, Kansas
The 2024 Southwestern Grand returned to the Kansas Trapshooting Association's homegrounds near Sedgwick, Kansas for its third straight year, September 9–15. With 20 trap fields, a consistent background, and warm, sunny weather with mild breezes, conditions were ideal across the week — and the tournament handled noticeably higher attendance than the year prior with ease.
Preliminary Days
Event 1 – Jim Kuhn Singles: Greyson Bollinger (NM) and Paul Dible (CO) each posted 100 straights; Bollinger's 50-straight carryover won Champion, Dible took Sub Veteran.
Event 2 – Kreem Kup Handicap: Kya Funkhouser (OK) topped the leaderboard with 98 for Champion. Peter Walker (MN) and Steven Gentle (AS) finished Runner-up and Sub Veteran.
Event 3 – Fred Smith Doubles: Kahne Packer (NE) broke 99 to win, one bird ahead of Runner-up Zach Nannini (MO). Funkhouser, Perry Weiner (ND), and James Frost (MO) carded 98s for Lady I, Sub Veteran, and Veteran.
MTS Custom Coating Doubles (Tue): Hall of Fame member Eric Munson (MN) broke the lone 100 straight.
Event 5 – Mid Kansas AG Singles: Eleven perfect scores; after a 175x175 carryover, Mike Westjohn (IL) claimed Champion. 2025 Hall of Fame inductee Tim Reed (SD) took Sub Veteran.
Mid Kansas AG Seed Handicap: Marvin Beumer (MO) broke 100 from the back fence to win by two birds.
Main Program
Straight Line Steel Singles (Wed): Fifteen shooters posted perfect scores. It took eleven additional rounds of 25 straight for Greyson Bollinger to be named Champion. Chris Vendel (PA) Runner-up, Bruce Davis (KS) AAA.
Fischer's Irrigation Handicap (Wed): Perry Weiner broke 100 straight from the 27-yard line to secure Champion by three birds.
Roy Rathbun Doubles (Wed): Sean Hawley (UT) broke 99 to win without a shoot-off. Zach Nannini posted 98 then 49x50 carryover for his third straight Runner-up Doubles trophy.
Wind Casino Class Singles (Thu): Chris Vendel won AAA after a 25x25 overtime. Jake Hamm (TX) won AA with 100 and 75 more in carryover.
Elite Concrete Handicap (Thu): Zach Nannini's lone 99 was the high score.
Indiana Gun Club Class Doubles (Thu): Hall of Famers Eric Munson and Jimmy Heller (AZ) both posted 100s, converting to Sub Veteran and Veteran trophies.
Bruce Davis Construction Doubles Championship (Fri): Eric Munson continued his remarkable week with another 100 straight for the title. Denis Bringelson (CO) and Benjamin Warwick (IL) each 99 for Runner-up and Junior Gold.
Caesar Guerini Preliminary Handicap (Fri): Burda Kohen (NE) won with the lone high score of 98.
Championship Events
Browning Singles Championship: Wyatt Williams (IL) broke 200 straight and added 124x125 in the shoot-off with four others to secure the title. Jake Hamm (TX) Runner-up; Peter Walker's perfect score earned AAA. Shelby Skaggs (OK) and Sandra Jo Jack were Lady I and Lady II with 198s.
Winchester Handicap Championship: Eddie Johnson put a 98 on the board and never looked back, winning without a shoot-off. Drew Hamel (KS) and Chris Vendel each 97 for Runner-up and AAA.
High Awards
High All Around (HAA): Eddie Johnson (KS) – 394x400, winning a shoot-off against Peter Walker (40 to 39).
High Over All (HOA): Eddie Johnson – 972x1000, two birds ahead of AAA winner Zach Nannini.
Final Take
The Southwestern Grand at the KTA proved itself again as a fantastic shoot. With growing attendance, an All American point factor of 5, and winning performances from shooters like Johnson, Williams, Munson, and Nannini, the future of this iconic trap shoot looks bright.
