Recap: 2024 Heartland Grand – Ackley, Iowa
The 17th Annual Heartland Grand was hosted August 19–25, 2024 at the Stockdale Gun Club in Ackley, Iowa. True to form, the event blended top-tier competition with the Stockdale family’s legendary hospitality—think nightly cookouts, fun side events, and a community atmosphere that keeps shooters coming back year after year.
Off the Line: Fun & Fellowship
Before the registered competition even began, shooters jumped into special events like Leland’s Dead Pair Doubles Marathon, the first-ever Fast Eddie Slider, and the White Flyer-sponsored WODS Buddy Shoot under the lights. Throughout the week, the fun continued with wobble events, cornhole, and table games. Evenings meant Iowa pork chops, ribeye steaks, fish fries, BBQ chicken, and desserts—plus the famous Lotzza Motzza pizza night.
Preliminary Days
ATA Hall of Fame Day: Zach Nannini (Singles AAA), Justin Debrie (AA), and Peter Walker (Handicap Champion with 98) were among the early winners.
Pat’s Auto Salvage Doubles: Cole Henning posted the lone 100, while Peter Walker and Zach Nannini battled in a carryover with 99s.
Singles & Handicap: Jason Krause, David Swigart, and Raylee Bishop all picked up class/category wins in fields full of 100s.
Midweek Battles
Midland Power Singles: Herb Lewis and Jon Mead both ran 100s, while David Swigart added a second Handicap title.
Decots Doubles: Ian Darroch claimed AAA with the only 100.
Championship Weekend
FIOCCHI Doubles (Friday): Richard Marshall Jr. repeated as Champion with a 100.
Browning Singles Championship (Saturday): Six shooters posted 200s, with Jason Krause repeating as Champion after shootoffs.
Winchester Handicap Championship (Sunday): 15-year-old Aidan Ireland broke 99 and then won a shoot-off against Grace Mansell for the title.
High Awards
High All Around (HAA): Zach Nannini – 396.
High Over All (HOA): Ian Darroch – 1080, earning a guided trophy deer hunt from the Stan Baker family and Rackett Grange.
Final Take
The 2024 Heartland Grand was a mix of big scores, family fun, and unbeatable hospitality. With champions like Krause, Marshall Jr., and Ireland making headlines, and the Stockdales serving up food and fellowship all week, it’s no wonder the Heartland Grand has earned a reputation as the “trapshooting cruise ship” of the ATA calendar.
