Recap: 2023 Spring Grand – Tucson, Arizona
The 47th Annual Spring Grand American was hosted February 8–18, 2023 at the Tucson Trap & Skeet Club in Arizona. Known for tricky weather, this year was no exception—cold temps, gusty winds, and dust storms had shooters joking it should be called the “Winter Grand.” Despite the conditions, the Spring Grand once again drew a hardy field of competitors and delivered memorable performances.
Pre-Spring Grand Highlights

Singles Championship: Don Williamson (AZ) broke 199 to win the opener.

Doubles Championship: Lloyd Beecraft (ON) won after a tough windy shootoff with Bernie Merchlewitz (SD).

Handicap Championship: Art Peyton (AB) prevailed after a four-round shootoff of 98s.

High All Around (HAA): Patrick Lamont (MB) posted 394×400.

High Over All (HOA): Jason Folvag (ND) topped with 1252×1300.
Grand Week Highlights

Premier Singles: Jason Krause (NE) and Warren Morimoto (CA) shot 100s to open Grand Week.

Prescott Handicap: Peter Walker (MN) led with 98.

Yuma Doubles: Patrick Stacey (OK) ran 100 to win.

Pleasant Valley Handicap: Patrick Lamont (MB) topped with 97.
Championship Events

Tucson Singles Class: David Shaeffer Jr. (MD) broke 200 to win AAA; strong 99s and 100s filled every class.

Tucson Doubles Class: Patrick Stacey (OK) and Dale Stockdale (IA) each shot 100, with Stockdale taking Veteran outright.

Fiocchi Doubles Championship: Patrick Lamont won in 40+ mph winds with a 97, defeating Bill Andrews (CO).

Browning Singles Championship: Devin Huguenot (CA) ran 200 straight to win Junior Gold and the overall crown, while Shaeffer Jr. finished runner-up.

Winchester Handicap Championship: Stacy Peery (WA) shot her career-first 100 straight to claim the title over a field of 503 shooters.

Final Take
The 2023 Spring Grand delivered all the drama shooters expect from Tucson—dust, wind, cold weather, and plenty of big moments. From Peery’s first 100 straight in the Handicap, to Huguenot’s 200 in Singles, and Lamont’s sweep of HAA/HOA, it proved once again why this event is one of the ATA’s most important early-season Grand Americans.
