Recap: 2023 Southwestern Grand – Wichita, Kansas
The 2023 Southwestern Grand was hosted at the Kansas Trapshooting Association’s homegrounds outside of Wichita, Kansas. With sunshine, light winds, and 70–80° days, conditions were nearly perfect all week, making for great competition and smooth tournament operations.
Preliminary Days
Event 1 Singles: Jon Marsh (NE) shot a 100 to win after four rounds of carryover.
Event 2 Handicap: Max Wineinger (KS) led with a 94.
Event 3 Doubles: Zach Nannini (MO) posted a 99 to win.
Event 5 Singles (Tuesday): Marvin Beumer (MO) ran 100 and then four perfect carryover rounds for the win.
Event 6 Handicap: Kya Funkhouser (OK) shot 98 for Champion.
Main Program
Event 7 Singles (Wednesday): Thirteen 100s posted, with Kevin Davis (CO) finally claiming Champion after 150 carryover targets.
Event 8 Handicap: Rob Taylor (KS) won with a 99.
Event 9 Doubles: Zach Nannini broke 99 and won Champion after a carryover, with Sean Hawley (UT) and Harlan Campbell Jr. (KS) close behind.
Championship Events
Singles Class (Thursday): Seven shooters ran 200s, with Jason Krause (NE) winning AAA, Shelby Skaggs (OK) Lady I, and Wyatt Williams (OK) Junior Gold.
Handicap (Thursday): David Deitch (MO) led with a 99 from the 27-yard line.
Doubles Class (Friday): Richard Marshall Jr. (NE) had the only 100 straight to win AAA; other class winners included Martin Wilbur (KS) and Daniel Bryant (NE).
Preliminary Handicap (Friday): Landon Sievers (IL) led 265 shooters with a 98.
Browning Singles Championship (Saturday): Five 200s posted; Landon Sievers outlasted Tyson Adams (KS) in a five-round shoot-off to win the title.
Fiocchi Doubles Championship (Sunday): Richard Marshall Jr. ran the lone 100 for Champion.
Winchester Handicap Championship (Sunday): Rob Taylor (KS) won via card draw after tying at 98 with Kenneth Johnston (KS) and Matthew Keist (OH).
High Awards
High All Around (HAA): Richard Marshall Jr. – 395×400.
High Over All (HOA): Wyatt Williams (IL) – 1072×1100.
Final Take
In just its second year at the Kansas Trapshooting Association grounds, the Southwestern Grand proved itself as a can’t-miss stop on the ATA calendar. With near-perfect weather, standout wins by shooters like Marshall Jr., Sievers, and Taylor, and smooth operations by the KTA staff, this Grand showed why Kansas is quickly becoming a premier destination for trapshooters.
