Recap: 2023 Southern Grand – Odessa, Florida

The 43rd Annual Southern Grand American was held March 12–19, 2023 at the Silver Dollar Shooters Club in Odessa, Florida. With 628 shooters from 42 states and provinces, the event delivered a full week of 1,600 program targets in true Southern Grand style—complete with sunny starts, gusty winds, and tough shootoffs.

Early Week Highlights

  • Sunday Preliminary Singles: Six perfect 100s were posted, including Deborah Ohye-Neilson (Lady II) and Mack Webb (Sr. Vet). Herbert Lewis won AAA with a 99.

  • Preliminary Handicap: Sub-Junior Cody Meredith stole the show with a 99 from 21.5 yards, topping the field by two birds.

  • Monday Handicap: Dan Best (22 yards) led with a 98. Junior shooters Griffin Lukins, Tyler Honnold, and Wyatt Readler followed with 95s.

  • Monday Doubles: Zach Nannini (97) won AAA; Cole Henning took Junior with 96.

Midweek Action

  • Tuesday Doubles: Michael Blaisdell led with a 98, while Nannini added another AAA title with a 97.

  • Richard Marshall Jr. Singles: Nine perfect scores, including winners Aaron Willoughby (AAA) and Wyatt Readler (Junior).

  • Wednesday Class Singles: Aaron Willoughby posted the only non-category 100. Sub-Jr. Cody Meredith, Brady Duren, and others also ran them all in categories.

  • Wednesday Handicap: Abigail Malecha edged Michael Mason in a shoot-off for the title after both posted 95s.

Championship Weekend

  • Ben Schumpert Handicap (Thursday): Tate Hedrick (OH) won outright with a 98 from the 27-yard line.

  • Michael Fox Jr. Doubles (Thursday): Junior Jordan Ziercher hit his career-first 100 straight to claim Champion.

  • Friday Doubles Class: Dale Stockdale ran 100 for Veteran Champion.

  • Caesar Guerini Handicap (Friday): Chip Minnick (OH) topped a massive 432-entry field with a 99.

  • Singles Championship (Saturday): Three Tennesseans—Brady Duren, Tyler Honnold, and Dick Mavis—posted 200s. Duren prevailed in the shootoff to win Champion.

  • Doubles Championship (Sunday): Joseph Breck IV (PA) edged Zach Nannini (MO) in a shootoff after both broke 98s.

  • Handicap Championship (Sunday): Andrew Feig (IL) took the crown with a 95, topping Cody Meredith and Mason Dye in a tough-weather shootoff.

High Awards

  • High All Around (HAA): Wyatt Readler – 384×400 (his first career Satellite Grand title).

  • High Over All (HOA): Cole Henning – 956×1000, leading a strong week of consistent scores.

The 2023 Southern Grand had everything: challenging Florida winds, career-first milestones, and dramatic championship shootoffs. With standout wins from Duren, Ziercher, Minnick, and Henning, the Silver Dollar once again proved why it’s one of the ATA’s premier venues and a winter escape shooters look forward to every year.
