Recap: 2023 Northeastern Grand – Cicero, New York

The 38th Annual Northeastern Grand American was held September 6–10, 2023 at the New York State ATA Homegrounds in Cicero, NY. As the first Satellite Grand of the 2024 ATA target year, the shoot drew 365 competitors from 21 states and provinces, all eager to get a head start on points before winter set in.

Early Week Highlights

  • Preliminary Singles (Wednesday): Herbert Lewis, Nick Hughes, and Brian Luther posted 100s, with Lewis taking the win after carryover.

  • Preliminary Handicap: Nick Hughes won a shoot-off for Champion with a 94.

  • Sportsmen’s Doubles: Donald Neilson Jr. edged Carl Chadwell in carryover after both shot 97.

Thursday Action

  • Sportsmen’s Singles: Herbert Lewis and Dave McMasters broke 100s, with Lewis taking Champion.

  • Sportsmen’s Handicap: Lewis doubled up with another win, posting a 96 from the 27-yard line.

  • Class Doubles: John Kirksey and Lloyd Beecraft led with 98s to win Sub Vet and Veteran.

Friday Shoots

  • Class Singles: Herbert Lewis claimed AAA with the lone 100. Carl Chadwell shot 100 to win Sub Vet.

  • Caesar Guerini Preliminary Handicap: Jeff Ravella won a shoot-off after a field of 95s.

Championship Weekend

  • Browning Singles Championship (Saturday): John Kirksey ran 200 straight to win, edging Walter Mader Jr. in a shootoff.

  • Fiocchi Doubles Championship (Sunday): Kirksey added a second crown with the only 100 straight of the event.

  • Winchester Handicap Championship (Sunday): Gary McKeown took the title outright with a 98.

High Awards

  • High All Around (HAA): Urb Womer – 389×400, winning a shootoff over David Shaeffer Jr.

  • High Over All (HOA): Herbert Lewis – 1155×1200, 11 targets ahead of Womer.

Final Take

The 2023 Northeastern Grand delivered great scores, strong competition, and solid target presentations, helping shooters end the season on a high note. With improvements in visibility and the promise of AA Green Top targets at future events, Cicero continues to prove itself as one of the ATA’s premier venues in the Northeast.
