Recap: 2023 Grand American Special Events – Sparta, Illinois

The 2023 Grand American once again featured its slate of special events, offering shooters a fun break from the main program. Proceeds from these events supported the Kids & Clays Foundation, which benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities. Since its founding in 1999, Kids & Clays has raised over $20 million for families in need.

28-Gauge Event (Aug. 6–7)

Competitors shot from the 22-yard line with 28-gauge shells provided as part of entry.

  • Champion: Patrick Murphy – 45.

  • Runner-up: Bill Yost – 43.

  • 3rd Place: Tim Lewis – 41.

  • Other winners included John Evick (Sub Vet), Donald Chrapla (Class A), Gavin Kuenstler (Sub Junior), and John Upcraft (Veteran).

20-Gauge Event (Aug. 8–9)

Format: 50 targets from ATA handicap yardage, max 1 oz. loads.

  • Champion: Patrick Jarnagain – 46 (won on reverse long run).

  • Runner-up: John Upcraft – 46 (Veteran Champion).

  • Sub Vet: Dana Edwards – 45.

  • Lady I & II: Jennifer Upcraft and Angie Cavett – 44.

  • Junior Gold: Hidalgo Rangel – 44.

  • Senior Vet: Jerry Brown – 44.

White Flyer Handicap Doubles (Aug. 8–9)

Shooters fired 25 pairs of doubles from their handicap yardage.

  • Champion: Jonathan Baker – 47 (won by reverse long run).

  • Runner-up: Quint Sudbury – 47.

  • 3rd Place: Jacob Diller – 47 (Junior Gold Champion).

  • Other winners included Ryan Denes, Russell Nuti, Marcus Draves, Garrett Woosley, and Stephan Terzo.

John Hiter Memorial International (Aug. 10–11)

Shooters fired from the 22-yard line with two shots allowed per target.

  • Champion: Jordyn Smedra – 50 straight.

  • Runner-up: Scott MacKenzie – 49.

  • Junior Champion: Cole Henning – 48.

  • 3rd Place: Craig Schmitt – 47.

  • Other winners included Jeremy Hess (Class AA), Kelan Kinion (Junior Gold), Brian Sullivan (Sub Vet), and Michael Dickey (Veteran).

Final Take

The special events at the Grand American bring variety and fun to Sparta, giving shooters a chance to try disciplines they may not often encounter. With strong performances, great participation, and proceeds supporting a good cause, they remain a highlight of the Grand American experience.
